Would Like to Learn More About Engagement Rings

My girlfriend and I have been getting more and more serious lately. We have been talking about moving in together. Her lease is up and we spend almost all of our time at my place, so it makes sense. But before she moves in I want to ask her to marry me. I would like to learn more about engagement rings. I would like to have one for her when I propose. I do not know anything about them though and I want to make sure that I am making an educated decision since I am hoping that she will wear this ring for the rest of her life.
