Staying free from Drugs

The decision to enter drug rehab is a critical stage in breaking the cycle of addiction and a good rehab program can steer an addict away from their dependency and set them on the path to recovery. But there is still much work to be done upon leaving the program; rehab gives the addict the tools to reclaim their life but once outside, the addict must use them wisely. There are several measures that should be taken after rehab to guard against a relapse. Accept the support of family and friends – it is much easier than going it alone, however, try to avoid socialising with old friends or acquaintances who still use drugs. It is important to fill your time with productive and creative endeavours to replace time that was previously used for drugs. Offering to help out at a local rehab centre or group therapy class could be a great way to instil a sense of purpose into your recovery. And most importantly, don’t give up – keep attending counselling sessions so that you never lose focus or forget about the support and help that is always available.
