Entangled umbilical cord results in birth injury

In this birth injury case, the entanglement of the umbilical cord caused a serious complication during labor and delivery.  The obstetrician realized that the baby was in breech position.  The obstetrician made the decision to correct the baby’s position by using a maneuver known as external cephalic version rotation.  But he did so without explaining other options to the mother and without advising her of the risks of this procedure.  As the obstetrician attempted the procedure, the baby’s umbilical cord became entangled and the blood supply to the baby was cut off.  Despite signs that the baby was experiencing fetal distress, the obstetrician compounded the problem by not performing an emergency C-section for 30 minutes.  The law firm that handled this case reported that they were able to achieve a confidential settlement.
